GM to recall 231,000 vehicles with fire hazard
MUMBAI, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Atorvastatin pills, the generic version of the drug Lipitor, will be recalled due to possible glass contamination, its Indian manufacturer announced.
Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., India's largest pharmaceutical company, said Friday small particles of glass, less than 1 millimeter (.039 inch) in size, may be in select batches of 10 milligram, 20 milligram and 409 milligram-dosage packages of 90-count and 500-count bottles.
Statins, or lipid-lowering drugs, are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States, used to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular ailments, CBS News said. Atorvastatin is the largest selling statin.
The drug will be voluntarily recalled in the United States while the company investigates the issue, the financial website Marketwatch said Friday.
"The investigation is expected to be completed within two weeks, and thereafter the company expects to resume supplies," Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical said in a government regulatory filing.
