Gold gains slightly Wednesday

NEW YORK, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Gold for December delivery rose modestly Wednesday on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile as equities could not pull out of a slump.

Equities closed lower on Wall Street for the fourth time in the past five trading sessions, although losses were modest compared with hard drops on Friday and Tuesday.

The dollar was flat with the dollar index off 0.01 percent to 79.94 on the International Exchange.

Gold added $4.10 to closed at $1,705.70 per troy ounce. Silver gained 26 cent to $31.88.

The euro fell to $1.297 from Tuesday's $1.2985. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 79.84 yen from 79.85 yen.
