THE ROCK, Ga., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-fil-A, reiterated his support of "Biblical families," after the U.S. restaurant chain pledged to stay out of politics.
WXIA-TV, in Atlanta, reported Thursday that Cathy in an interview dodged questions on same-sex marriage, but said, "Families are very important to our country. And they're very important to those of us who are concerned about being able to hang on to our heritage."
"We support Biblical families, and we've always been a part of that," Cathy said.
The restaurant chain became embroiled in the gay marriage debate when Cathy said in July that, "We are very much supportive of the family -- the Biblical definition of the family unit."
It was also found the restaurant chain had donated money to groups opposing same-sex marriage.
In September, however, the restaurant issued a statement saying it would steer clear of politics.
That evoked a reaction on the restaurant's Facebook page with some customers saying that cleared the way for renewed patronage, while others said the company had become "spineless."
The issue had become a thorn in the company's side in Chicago, where opposition to a new restaurant there centered on the company's anti-gay stance.
Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno withdrew his opposition to the new restaurant after the company said it would stay out of politics, the Chicago Tribune reported at the time.
