RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- The Richmond, Va., Federal Reserve Bank said manufacturing activity has picked up in the central Atlantic states, pulling a business index from minus 9 to 4.

Numbers above zero indicate growth.

The new orders index gained 27 points in September to reach 17, while the shipments index added 8 points to rise from 1 to 9.

Employment remained in contraction with the jobs index at minus 5, the Fed said.
