WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- First-time jobless claims rose by 8,000 in the week ending Saturday, the U.S. Labor Department said.

The weekly report issued Thursday said there were 365,000 initial claims in the week.

The four-week rolling average was also 365,000, down by 2,750 from the previous week, the department reported.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 21 were in Kentucky (up by 4,073), Vermont (up by 236) and Puerto Rico (up by 48). The largest decreases were in California (down by 32,107), New York (down by 15,615) and North Carolina (down by 12,448).

The U.S. unemployment rate is 8.2 percent. After rising 0.1 of a percentage point from April to May, it remained unchanged in June on the addition of 80,000 jobs.

The unemployment rate will be updated Friday with the release of July's employment situation report.
