Gold holds steady Thursday

NEW YORK, May 31 (UPI) -- Gold futures held nearly still Thursday, falling 0.13 percent to $1,563.70 per troy ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Gold gave up $2, as equity markets were mixed on Wall Street and the dollar index was flat, rising 0.06 percent to 83.09 on the International Exchange.

Silver futures for July delivery shed 25 cents to $27.73 per troy ounce.

The U.S. dollar was mostly lower in Asia, mostly higher in Europe.

The euro continued to slide, hitting $1.2364 from Wednesday's $1.2366.

Against the yen, the dollar reached 78.34 yen from 79.07 yen.

The British pound was $1.5407 from $1.5479. The dollar was 1.0328 Canadian dollars from 1.0301 Canadian.
