Gallup: Family of four needs an average $58,000 a year
TORONTO, May 7 (UPI) -- Passengers injured when a co-pilot dozed, and then put a jetliner into a dive when he awoke, are suing Air Canada for $20 million, plaintiffs attorneys said.
A Toronto law firm brought the lawsuit Monday, seeking class-action certification on behalf of 95 passengers injured when they were jolted while on Flight AC878 from Toronto to Zurich, Switzerland, in January 2011, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Air Canada originally told the passengers the episode was caused by unexpected turbulence, but a Transportation Safety Board of Canada report in April concluded the co-pilot woke up in confusion, thinking the aircraft was about to collide with a U.S. military aircraft.
Plaintiffs' attorney Darcy Merkur said his clients "feel completely manipulated, completely lied to and they are pissed off; they want a corporation like Air Canada to be accountable for misleading them."
