Markets closed mixed Friday

NEW YORK, April 20 (UPI) -- Stocks closed mixed Friday on Wall Street after an early boost provided by quarterly reports of McDonald's and Microsoft.

Earnings rose at both Dow components. General Electric, also listed on the Dow Jones industrial average, posted numbers that beat expectations although earnings at GE slipped 12 percent.

With no major government reports to muddy the waters, the DJIA added 65.16 points at the close, the index rising 0.5 percent to 13,029.26.

The tech-dominated Nasdaq composite index dragged, losing 7.11 points or 0.24 percent to 3,000.45. The Standard and Poor's 500 index added 1.61 points or 0.12 percent to 1,378.53.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 2,004 stocks advanced and 1,054 declined on a volume of 3.6 billion shares traded.

The 10-year treasury note was unchanged, yielding 1.97 percent.

The euro rose to $1.3219 from Thursday's $1.3137. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 81.52 yen from Thursday's 81.59 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.28 percent, 27.02, to 9,561.36.

In London, the FTSE 100 index added 0.48 percent, 27.60, to 5,772.15.
