Transit strike hobbles Italy

ROME, March 14 (UPI) -- Transit workers in Italy went on strike Wednesday, stopping train, bus and subway service for four hours to protest the government's economic reforms.

The strike slowed or halted services in Rome, Milan and Naples, as thousands of transit workers walked off their jobs, ANSA reported Wednesday.

"The so-called 'Grow Italy' measure under discussion in Parliament contains even more liberalization, which in some cases has jumped into the privatization of some segments of transport," said Walter Volpi, a spokesman for the transportation union ORSA.

Labor reforms and privatization are part of Italian Premier Mario Monti's plans to restore the government to financial health, ANSA reported.
