Online job listings rose in February

NEW YORK, March 6 (UPI) -- The ratio of job listings online to unemployed U.S. workers dropped below 1-to-3 for the first time since November 2008, The Conference Board said.

Online job listings rose by 39,900 in February after rising in December and January, the research firm said Monday.

There are 8.4 million more unemployed people than there are online advertisements for jobs. However, in February, there were 2.9 persons unemployed for every job vacancy -- dropping below 3 for the first time in more than three years.

"This reflects both significant gains in labor demand as well as drops in unemployment levels since the end of the recession," said June Shelp, vice president at The Conference Board.

"Labor demand is up 227,000 over the past three months, continuing to narrow the gap between the unemployed and available jobs. Labor demand is back in line with the pre-recession series high in 2007," she said.

Improvements are varied state to state. Online job listings in Michigan in February were 79 percent above June 2009, which is the official end of the recession.

In Ohio, job listings are up 92 percent in the same period. In Wisconsin, listings have grown 86 percent. In Minnesota, they have grown by 108 percent.

There are variations by job type, as well. Listings for office and administrative jobs rose by 27,400 in February to 454,200. Healthcare job listings rose by 16,600 to 596,900. For registered nurses, specifically, there are 2.4 job openings to every qualified nurse, a ration that is "quite favorable," the Conference Board said.

Listings for sales jobs rose by 16,300 to 560,700 in the month.
