AA's new pay-for perk: Extra legroom

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 3 (UPI) -- U.S. carrier American Airlines said it is refitting coach sections to provide extra legroom for passengers willing to pay for the perk.

The airline said it would change the seating in the front of the coach section and call that seating area the "Main Cabin Extra" section. The new perk would come with early boarding privileges, the airline said.

The company said it anticipated the Main Cabin Extra section would be installed in its A321s, A319s, B777-300ERs and 787 aircraft.

The price for the legroom would be "between $8 and $108 per segment, depending on the length of the flight," AA said.

For the remainder of the year, the carrier's elite fliers in the AAdvantage Gold will be offered seating in the new section at the time of booking. AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum and customers who purchase tickets at full fare will be offered seats in the new section, as well, "subject to availability," the airline said.
