OTTAWA, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- New car and truck sales in Canada dropped 3 percent to 133,146 vehicles in December, the second consecutive monthly decline, Statistics Canada reported Tuesday.
The largest decline in sales occurred in the truck sector; minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses. That market saw a decrease of 6 percent to 75,175 units in December, the agency said.
Overall new passenger car sales rose 1.1 percent to 57,971 vehicles. Sales of North American built cars edged down 0.2 percent, while non-North American car sales rose by 3.3 percent, StatsCan said.
"Preliminary industry data indicate that the number of new motor vehicles sold in January 2012 increased 16 percent on the strength of passenger cars," the report said.
