U.S. markets recover from steep losses
DETROIT, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- United Auto Workers chief Bob King said U.S. workers' rights are being trampled by "right-wing Republicans" and "1-percenters" and it's time to take action.
King said the union would train members to take part in demonstrations, even illegal ones, The Detroit News reported Friday.
"It will take direct action. It will take us being willing to face arrest. It will take us being willing to be part of marches and demonstrations," the union's president said at an event marking a 1937 strike against General Motors Co. that resulted in the UAW's first national contract, the News reported.
King said "right-wing Republicans" and "1-percenters" have been behind efforts to roll back workers' rights.
"They are attacking democracy in America. They are attacking the labor movement," King said.
"It's not just about getting someone elected. That's not enough," King said to reporters after the speech, referring to President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.
