U.S. markets recover from steep losses

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Labor said there were 3.4 million job openings on the last business day of December, a three-year high.
While job openings rose from November's figure of 3.1 million, available jobs aren't high by historic standards. In December 2007, as the recession began, there were 4.4 million job openings listed.
In the private sector there were 3 million job openings at the end of the month. The highest numbers came from professional and business services with 652,000 openings, followed by education and healthcare with 588,000 openings.
