Two-of-5 want healthy Super Bowl food

WASHINGTON, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- The Super Bowl and food go hand in hand, but a U.S. survey says 2 out of 5 individuals who plan to watch the big game say healthful food items are a must.

The National Restaurant Association estimates 48 million Americans will order takeout or delivery food from a restaurant on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. In addition, 12 million are expected to visit a restaurant or bar to watch the NFL championship game, the association said.

Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the research and knowledge group for the association, said 69 percent of survey respondents said salsa, dips or spreads are must-haves for the Super Bowl.

Sixty-three percent said chicken wings are essential, 61 percent favor pizza, 50 percent favor desserts and 49 percent favor subs/sandwiches. In addition, 42 percent said healthful food items are a must on their game day table, the survey says.

The association's research shows 31 percent of individuals who plan to watch the Super Bowl at their own home or someone else's home expect to order restaurant takeout or delivery. Younger adults -- ages 18-34 -- and individuals with children are more likely to order restaurant food, at 52 percent and 40 percent, respectively.
