Gold slides Tuesday

NEW YORK, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Gold prices fell modestly in New York Tuesday, as equity markets were mixed.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold shed $13.80 to reach $1,664.80 per troy ounce. Silver lost 29 cents to hit $31.97 per ounce.

The euro rose to $1.3034 from Monday's $1.3016. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 77.68 yen from 77.03 yen.

The British pound fell to $1.5623 from $1.5626. Against the Hong Kong dollar, the greenback was higher at 7.7607 from 7.7604.

The dollar rose to 1.0094 Canadian dollars from 1.009. The Australian dollar fell to $1.0486 from $1.0493.
