U.S. markets recover from steep losses

NEW YORK, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Gold prices rose slightly in New York Monday, as equity markets fell flat.
On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold gained 80 cents to reach $1,679 per troy ounce. Silver added 14 cents to hit $32.41 per ounce.
The euro rose to $1.3022 from Friday's $1.3016. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 76.96 yen from 77.03 yen.
The British pound rose to $1.5573 from $1.5568. Against the Hong Kong dollar, the greenback was higher at 7.7609 from 7.7607.
The dollar fell to 1.0074 Canadian dollar from 1.0085. The Australian dollar rose to $1.053 from $1.0525.
