MIAMI, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Burger King said it would expand on an experiment of delivering burgers and fries to customers, which it began at four restaurants in Washington, D.C.

As of next week, Burger King said it would expand the pilot program to 16 stores, The Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

The company is testing delivery in Washington that makes the service available for customers within a 10-minute drive from the restaurants. It is only offered to customers with a minimum order of $8 at some restaurants and $10 at others.

The restaurants also charge a fee of $2 for the service.

Burger King offers delivery services in Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, Columbia and Peru, but not in the United States.

The exception is the concept Whopper Bar restaurant in South Beach, Fla., which also serves alcohol.

A few rival McDonald's restaurants offer delivery services in New York. Both McDonald's and Burger King, the No. 1 and No. 2 largest hamburger chains are being pressured by up-and-coming casual eateries such as Five Guys Burgers and Fries and Smashburger, the Times said.
