Rival UPS is expecting to handle 26 million items on its busiest day of the year, which the firm predicted would be on Thursday, Dec. 22.

UPS also said there would be up to five different days in December in which it would handle about 25 million or more packages.

The News said the increase in online shopping has begun to put the squeeze on shipping services, as more people are waiting until the last minute to buy gifts, the News said.

At a FedEx shipping center in Novi, Mich., senior manager Dennis Glover said the company was prepared for the late shopping rush.

"This is our businesses. We know how to do it, and we have been preparing for it," he said.
