Logitech gives up on Google TV

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Logitech, one of the first backers of Google TV, says it is walking away from the venture after losing millions of dollars on its Revue set-top box.

With the first version of Google TV taking heat for its complicated interface, buggy and slow performance and lack of Web-based content, it made the $300 Revue a difficult sell, the company said.

With Google TV on the Revue, Logitech "executed a full-scale launch with a beta product and it cost us dearly," the company told investors.

The Revue's failure cost Logitech well over $100 million in operating profit and prompted Chief Executive Officer Gerald Quindlen to step down in July, PC World reported Friday.

Current CEO Guerrino De Luca said the company may consider another go-round with the platform eventually but for now will sit "on the bench."

Google has updated the software with a simpler interface and support for Android apps, but with Logitech out it must now find new hardware partners.
