Markets close with solid gains

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. markets posted solid gains Tuesday following positive numbers on European markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average added 101.79 points, or 0.84 percent, to 12,170.18, taking a hint from financial stocks in Europe that rose in anticipation of a vote in Italy on an austerity budget plan.

By close of trading on Wall Street, the Standard & Poor's 500 index added 14.80 points or 1.17 percent to 1,275.92. The Nasdaq composite index gained 32.24 points or 1.2 percent to 2,727.49.

The benchmark 10-year treasury note slipped 12/32 to yield 2.08 percent.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 2,252 stocks advanced and 791 declined on a volume of 3.7 billion shares traded.

The euro rose to $1.3834 from Monday's $1.3777. Against the yen, the dollar fell to 77.77 yen from Monday's 78.06 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index lost 1.27 percent, 111.58, to 8,655.51.

In London, the FTSE 100 index rose 1.03 percent, 56.52, to 5,567.34.
