Motorola Mobility to lay off 800

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Smart phone producer Motorola Mobility said it would cut 185 jobs in its home state of Illinois and 800 worldwide to improve its operating efficiency.

Company spokeswoman Jennifer Weyrauch-Erickson said that the cuts were part of a reduction in "discretionary" spending, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday.

In May, the company, which is based in Libertyville, Ill., said it had secured $100 million in incentives to keep its headquarters and manufacturing facility in the city, where it employs 3,500 workers.

The newspaper said it would keep its tax breaks if it maintained a workforce of 2,500 in the state.

Motorola Mobility broke away from Motorola in January

In August, search engine giant Google said it would by the company for $12.5 billion.

The layoffs have nothing to do with Google's takeover, the company said.
