Canadian new car sales slump in July

OTTAWA, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Sales of new vehicles in Canada dropped 6.2 percent in July to 132,386 units, Statistics Canada reported Thursday from Ottawa.

The agency said sales of North American-built passenger cars were down 10.3 percent, which accounted for most of the decline.

Sales of minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses were also down 5.9 percent to 76,360 units in July, a third decline in four months.

"Sales of overseas-built passenger cars edged down 0.2 percent, continuing a downward trend which began in early 2010," StatsCan said.

By province, the agency said Ontario sales accounted for half of the national decrease, with an 8.3 percent fall in new vehicle sales.

Alberta sales fell 7.9 percent in July, reversing an upward trend that began since the beginning of the year, the agency said.
