Second U.S. retailer trims Canadian prices

TORONTO, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The second U.S. fashion retailer in a week has dropped the policy of charging more for the same goods in Canada, the Toronto Star reported Thursday.

In Toronto's expansive retail Eaton Center, Abercrombie & Fitch, popular with teens, began removing price tags that showed both U.S. and higher Canadian prices this week, the newspaper said. The store also was offering 30 percent off everything.

The move was similar to that of U.S. clothing retailer J. Crew, which announced last week it was adjusting its Canadian prices downward, the Star said.

Abercrombie spokesman Eric Cerny told the newspaper the company didn't want to tip off the competition about its plans to appease Canadian shoppers.

"I cannot comment on our specific plans but we are looking at a few things that we think will help improve the sales trend in Canada," he said.

Canadian consumers have long complained of the price disparity between the two countries and since the advent of the Internet, have challenged retailers why Canadian prices can be as much as 50 percent higher than advertised in the United States.

Additionally, for most of the last year, the Canadian dollar has been worth more than its U.S. counterpart. Thursday, the Canadian dollar was worth 2 cents more, but has been as much as 7 cents higher.
