Wells Fargo to test debit card fees

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Wells Fargo & Co., one of the largest U.S. banks, announced Tuesday it plans to test a $3 monthly debit card fee in four states.

The fee will take effect Oct. 14 in Georgia, New Mexico, Nevada and Oregon, CNNMoney reported. A spokeswoman said customers who do not use their cards will not have to pay the fee, and it will be waived for some others.

"We regularly review our pricing and take into account the needs of our customers, industry trends, the market competition, and our cost of doing business," she said.

The Federal Reserve recently capped the "swipe fees" banks charge merchants when the cards have been used for purchases. Banks have been examining ways to replace the revenue, and JPMorgan Chase recently began testing a $3 debit card fee in northern Wisconsin.
