Toyota to make 8.9M vehicles in 2012

TOKYO, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. plans to make a record 8.9 million vehicles globally in 2012, company officials said Wednesday.

The world's biggest automaker had been hit by supply chain shortages following the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and tsunami but company officials said those conditions have improved, Kyodo News reported.

The ambitious target of 8.9 million units for 2012 would include 3.5 million units domestically and 5.4 million units overseas. It would exceed the previous record of 8.53 million units in 2007.

The company's output this year is set for 7.15 million.

Next's year production could be 10 million units if output of affiliates Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd. are included, the report said.
