OTTAWA, July 20 (UPI) -- Higher sales in agricultural industries helped increase Canadian wholesale sales by 1.9 percent to $47.6 billion in May, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday.
The surge reversed a 0.1 percent monthly decline in April, the agency said.
Agriculture subsectors are part of the miscellaneous sector, which was up 11.8 percent for the month. "Sales in the agricultural supplies industry bounced back from weather-related declines in April," StatsCan said. "Sales in the agricultural supplies industry increased 27.8 percent in May, its highest growth since May 2008."
There was also a 26.1 percent increase in wholesale sales in the farm, lawn and garden machinery and equipment industries.
Among the two sectors posting declines, motor vehicles and parts registered the largest decline of 1.5 percent, which the agency attributed to supply disruptions from the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
