Consumer confidence drifts lower

NEW YORK, June 28 (UPI) -- U.S. consumer confidence fell in June for the second consecutive month, the Conference Board said Tuesday.

The monthly Consumer Confidence Index, which uses 1985 as a base year with an assigned value of 100, fell from 61.7 in May to 58.5.

The Present Situation Index dropped from 39.3 to 37.6, while the Expectations Index, measuring consumer confidence in the economy six months down the road, fell from 76.7 in May to 72.4, the Conference Board said.

In June, the monthly survey of 5,000 households found the number of respondents indicating economic conditions were "good" held steady at 14.3 percent. The number of respondents indicating conditions were "bad" rose from 37.2 percent from 38 percent.

Consumers were less optimistic in June about the labor market than they were a month ago. The percentage of respondents indicating jobs were "plentiful" fell from 5.7 percent to 5.2 percent, while the number indicating jobs were "hard to get" rose from 43.5 percent to 43.8 percent.
