CUPERTINO, Calif., June 9 (UPI) -- Technology giant Apple Inc. said it is moving its headquarters, but not very far, planning to build in Cupertino, Calif., where it now resides.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs presented the project to the City Council and said the new facility will look "a little like a spaceship," the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

It is expected to be the workplace for 12,000 Apple employees, more than four times the number who work in its current headquarters.

"We've got almost 12,000 people in the area, so we're renting buildings -- not very good buildings, either -- at an ever-greater radius from our campus and we're putting people in those. And it's clear that we need to build a new campus," Jobs said.

His appearance at the City Council meeting surprised some people, as Jobs is on medical leave from the company.
