Producer prices climb in Europe

BRUSSELS, June 6 (UPI) -- Producer prices in the Europe Union rose 1 percent in April compared with March, Eurostat, the region's data office, said Monday.

In the 17-member eurozone, the area that shares the euro as currency, producer prices rose 0.9 percent, Eurostat said.

Compared to a year ago in April, prices for industrial producers rose 6.7 percent in the eurozone and 7.8 percent in the larger European Union, which has 27 members.

Month-to-month prices rose 0.2 percent for producers for durable goods and 0.4 percent for non-durable goods. Energy costs in the eurozone rose twice as fast, month-to-month, as the next highest category, climbing 2 percent. In the European Union, energy costs rose 2.2 percent.

Prices rose 1 percent excluding construction costs in the European Union.

Prices rose the fastest by far in Latvia, up 4.6 percent, followed by the Netherlands, where prices rose 1.4 percent.
