NEW YORK, June 2 (UPI) -- The New York Times named seasoned journalist and lifelong fan of the newspaper Jill Abramson to serve as its next executive editor.
"In my house growing up, the Times substituted for religion," said Abramson, currently one of two deputy editors in charge of the company's newsroom. "If the Times said it, it was the absolute truth," she said, the Times reported Thursday.
Abramson, a former Washington bureau chief and investigative reporter, is replacing Bill Keller, who is going down the ladder by choice, taking a position as a full-time writer for the newspaper.
Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said Keller has "been my partner for the last eight years. He's been an excellent partner."
Keller said, "Jill and Dean together is a powerful team," referring to Abramson and Dean Baquet, the Washington bureau chief, who, in a second management shift, was given the job of managing editor Thursday.
