CPI in eurozone up 2.8 percent in April

BRUSSELS, May 16 (UPI) -- The European Union's statistical office, Eurostat, said Monday consumer prices in the eurozone jumped an estimated 2.8 percent in April.

Eurozone countries are Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Estonia.

In the larger, 27-nation European Union, the annual inflation rate in April hit 3.2 percent, Eurostat said.

Eurostat said inflation in the EU ranged from 1.5 percent on an annual basis in Ireland to 8.4 percent in Romania.

Among the lowest inflation rates, the Czech Republic posted consumer prices up 1.6 percent and Sweden reported 1.8 percent inflation. Among the highest, Estonia's inflation rate in April was 5.4 percent. In Lithuania and Hungary, inflation in April was 4.4 percent.

Prices for transportation, up 5.9 percent on an annual basis, and housing, up 5 percent, posted the largest gains. Prices for telecommunications fell 0.12 percent while prices for vegetables fell 0.1 percent.
