WASHINGTON, May 7 (UPI) -- An estimated 75 million U.S. adults will dine at a restaurant on Mother's Day, the most popular day to eat out, the National Restaurant Association says.
The association's survey indicates 58 percent of Mother's Day diners say they will go out to a restaurant for dinner Sunday, 32 percent say they will go out for lunch, 24 percent for brunch, 10 percent for breakfast -- and one in five say they will go out for more than one meal.
Hudson Riehle, senior vice president at the association, says more than one-half of mothers say they like dining out on Mother's Day because it gives them a break from cooking.
Asked about where they would like to dine for Mother's Day, 46 percent of moms say they prefer their favorite restaurant, 22 percent say they prefer to celebrate at a restaurant that is kid-friendly, 19 percent say Mother's Day specials are the most important factor and 11 percent say they would like to visit a restaurant they haven't been to before.
Nineteen percent say their preferred gift this Mother's Day is a gift card for their favorite restaurant.
The association surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults April 21-23 about their plans for Mother's Day. No margin of error was provided.
