MONFALCONE, Italy, April 29 (UPI) -- An Italian engineering company says it has completed construction of the country's biggest passenger ship, the 1,000-foot-long Carnival Magic.

The company, Fincantieri, put the finishing touches on the cruise liner, built as the flagship of Carnival Cruise Lines, ANSA reported Thursday.

The Carnival Magic weighs 128,500 tons and its highest point sits 225 feet above the water, ANSA reported.

The cruise liner, under construction for 18 months at a shipyard in Monfalcone near Gorizia in northeastern Italy, has 1,845 cabins for a maximum 4,684 passengers and 746 cabins for its 1,386 crew members.

The Carnival Magic, reported to have cost $840 million, is Carnival Cruises' 100th ship and will make its maiden voyage Sunday with a nine-day Mediterranean cruise.

A growing number of Italians are booking Mediterranean cruises, taking advantage of reasonably priced packages, ANSA reported.

In October, the Carnival Magic is scheduled to sail to its year-round home port of Galveston, Texas, from where it will cruise the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
