CHICAGO, April 6 (UPI) -- Just under 100 chief executive officers lost their positions at U.S. corporations in March, a research group said Wednesday.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas said the number was "virtually unchanged in March," as 99 CEOs departed in the month, compared to 92 in February.

For the year, CEO departures are down 15 percent from the first three month of 2010.

To date, 287 CEOs left their jobs this year, compared to 340 by the end of March of 2010.

In March 2011, 16 CEOs left their jobs in the healthcare sector, while 12 left CEO positions in the government, non-profit sector.

The financial sector, with the third highest total for the month, lost 11 CEOs in March.

"Changes at the top of the organizational chart are not always tied to the economy. Many companies have achieved business success by maintaining stability at the top, while others change CEOs whenever a new operational strategy is initiated," said John Challenger, the CEO-tracking CEO at Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
