SACRAMENTO, March 25 (UPI) -- California added 96,500 jobs in February, the highest monthly total since 1990, the state's Economic Development Department said Friday.
The state's unemployment rate dropped from 12.4 percent to 12.2 percent in the month, the state said.
The jump came seemingly out of nowhere. A year ago in February, the unemployment rate in the state was 12.4 percent. The total jobs added in the 11 months prior to February was 99,800.
The biggest expansion in jobs was in profession and business services, which added 39,900 positions.
Among California counties, Colusa County, inland and northeast of San Francisco, had the highest unemployment rate at 27.1 percent. Marin County, on the north side of San Francisco Bay had the lowest at 7.8 percent.
California still trails only Nevada in states with high unemployment. In Nevada the unemployment rate is 13.6 percent, the highest in the nation.
