NEW YORK, March 15 (UPI) -- Gold futures dropped sharply in New York Tuesday in a sweeping sell-off after the Nikkei 225 index in Japan fell more than 10 percent.
Gold prices on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange shed $29.40 or 2.1 percent to $1,395.50 per troy ounce. Inflation bellwether crude oil shed $3.78 to $97.41 per barrel.
The euro fell to $1.3997 from Monday's $1.3999. The dollar slipped to 80.70 yen from 81.69 yen.
The British pound fell to $1.608 from $1.6184, while the U.S. dollar rose to 7.7969 Hong Kong dollars from 7.7908 HKD.
The Australian dollar fell to $0.9907 from $1.0105.
In India, the dollar rose to 45.16 rupees from 44.984 rupees. Against the South Korean won, the dollar rose to 1,26812 won from 1.2671.
