EU gains some jobs in latest quarter

BRUSSELS, March 15 (UPI) -- Both the eurozone and the larger European Union added jobs in the fourth quarter with employment rising 0.1 percent October through December, Eurostat said.

The 16-member eurozone and the 27-member EU had the same gain of 0.1 percent quarter-to-quarter and the same gain of 0.3 percent comparing the fourth quarter to the same period a year ago, Eurostat said Tuesday.

Both areas saw employment in construction and manufacturing drop, while agricultural employment rose. Employment also grew in health, education and public administration.

In the quarter, Malta showed the highest percentage of job growth, 3.4 percent, followed by Sweden with 2.4 percent job growth.

Bulgaria experienced the largest contraction, down 4.4 percent, followed by Slovenia with a 2.1 percent job loss.
