Weather may hurt Super Bowl retail sales

DALLAS, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Dallas-area retailers' hopes for a big spike in sales from the Super Bowl have been threatened by the unusually wintry weather, business analysts said.

But retailers hope out-of-towners will still make it to the city for Sunday's big game and for special parties and shows put on by high-end stores, The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday.

Super Bowl spending peaked at $195 million in Miami in 2007, the last one before the recession rolled across the United States.

Before this week's massive storm hit, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP said the game in Arlington, Texas, might bring $200 million in direct spending to area retailers.

Upmarket retailers have some offerings that could help, including a $4,995 carry-on bag by Jimmy Choo and the $5,495 high python-skin boots at Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo's new travel bags, the newspaper said.

Angie Freed, general manager of Galleria Dallas, said many stores there reported sales were up as much as 50 percent during the NBA All-Star game last year.

"We know a lot of people come with spouses or friends who aren't going to the game," Freed said. "But they come to shop and enjoy a weekend away from home."
