NOVO-OGAREVO, Russia, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is ordering a cut of almost 1,500 employees from the federal staff, his spokesman said Friday.

"Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to cut the number of government officials by 1,453 from March 31," Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti. He said the government would be reduced by another 5 percent in 2012 and by 10 percent in 2013 under Putin's instructions.

Peskov said the average age of officials was 45 and women accounted for half of the government staff.
