LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Apple has announced its Mac App Store is now open for business with more than 1,000 free and paid applications available for download.

The app store, with sections for education, games, graphics and design, lifestyle, productivity and others is available for Mac users running the Snow Leopard operating system who update to version 10.6.6, USA Today reported Thursday.

"With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start," Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs said in a statement released by Apple. "We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps."

As in Apple's similar App Store for the iPhone and iPad, you can get word of the newest apps and look up popularity charts for top paid and top free apps.

Apple made the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
