For retailers, an off week that may change

WASHINGTON, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. retail sales dropped in the week ending Dec. 4, as retailers could not match numbers from the week that included Black Friday, a trade group said.

Sales fell 2.1 percent from the previous week, the International Council of Shopping Centers said in a weekly report.

Chain store sales, however, rose 2.6 percent from the same week a year ago.

Sluggish sales for the week came with some encouraging news for retailers. In a survey ending Sunday, 40.1 percent of shoppers indicated they had completed their holiday shopping for the year.

That figure is "far lower than in recent years," suggesting a fair number of consumers are still poised to shop for the holidays, the trade group said.
