General Motors saw its market share slip from 19.6 percent to 19 percent after cutting four of its brands during bankruptcy restructuring.

American gains appeared to come at the expense of Japan. Japan's Toyota saw its market share dip from 16.6 percent in the first half of 2008 to 15.2 percent.

Jeff Schuster, forecasting director at J.D. Power, told the newspaper he expected domestic automakers to pick up another point or so overall this year and maintain about 45 percent of the U.S. market for the near term.
