LAS VEGAS, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Moving to a four-day work week could save the city of Las Vegas up to $24 million in two and a half years, if a union approves the move, city officials said.

A statement issued by the city also said with longer hours Monday through Thursday Las Vegas government would "work as much as possible to not adversely impact citizens needing to city business on Fridays," The Las Vegas Sun reported Thursday.

Val Sharp, vice president of the 1,400 member City Employees Association, said the CEA was recommending its members approve the contract, although concessions were part of the package.

"Based on our discussions with the city, we are encouraging them to support the proposal," which will be tested with a membership vote on Oct. 19.

The contract calls for working 9.5 hour days Monday through Thursday, which cuts a 40-hour work week down to 38 hours.

The proposal also cancels previous cost-of-living wage increases for two years and mandates a one week unpaid furlough the week of Dec. 26.

"No one wants to see a reduction in pay, but we know this move will save a lot of money, and ultimately a lot of city jobs," CEA president Don King said in a statement.

City Manager Betsy Fretwell said, "This agreement achieves our goals of maintaining critical services, preserving the city's fiscal integrity and saving jobs."
