Drones over U.S. may pose security risks
WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Employment at U.S. scheduled airlines fell 2.4 percent from June 2009 to June 2010, the 24th straight monthly loss of jobs, the Transportation Department said.
Six hub airlines decreased employment as Delta Airlines completed its merger with Northwest with the number of full-time airline employees falling to 256,600.
Two part-time employees are counted as one full-timer.
The U.S. airline industry had 378,000 full-time workers in June 2010, down 9,400 from June 2009, the government report said.
Hub network airlines employed 67.8 percent of full-time passenger airline workers while low-cost carriers employed 16.9 percent and regional carriers 13.8 percent.
Southwest, AirTran and regional carriers Comair, Atlantic Southwest, Pinnacle, Horizon, Mesa, Air Wisconsin, Mesaba, Shuttle America and Lynx Airlines all had fewer employees in June than 12 months earlier, the Transportation Department's Bureau of Transportation Statistics said.
