Barnes & Noble building Nook kiosks

NEW YORK, July 30 (UPI) -- Amazon.com reduced the cost of its cheapest e-reader, the Kindle, and book retailer Barnes & Noble is launching a counterattack.

The bookseller will launch an aggressive marketing campaign of its Nook e-reader in September, building stand-alone sales boutiques in its 720 stores, The New York Times reported Friday.

Barnes & Noble customers will get to try the product before buying it, an advantage over online retailer Amazon.com, a B&N spokesman said.

"I think that's everything," William Lynch, chief executive of Barnes & Noble, told the Times. "American consumers want to try and hold gadgets before they purchase them."

The book retailer will remove some of its music merchandise to free up space for Nook marketing.

Both retailers have been aggressively marketing their e-book readers all summer. The basic Kindle price has just been reduced to $139. Barnes & Noble previously reduced the price of the Nook from $259 to $199, the newspaper reported.
