Verizon outgains AT&T in 2nd quarter

NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- Verizon Wireless, based in New York, added 665,000 contract customers in the second quarter, a decline over last year, but still bettering AT&T, analysts said.

AT&T reported it added 496,000 contract customers, despite the introduction of the iPhone 4 near the end of the reporting period. Verizon's contract signings were boosted by a rollout of Droid smartphones running on Google's Android software, The Wall Street Journal said.

Verizon Wireless's numbers represented a 40 percent decline from a year earlier, but officials said they see good things ahead.

"We still see a lot of upside here now that we're in a much better position from a device lineup perspective," Verizon Chief Financial Officer John Killian told the Journal.

The iPhone produced a key revenue stream among mobile devices, increasing the average monthly bill for AT&T customers to $62.63 compared with $51.56 for Verizon Wireless customers, the Journal said. AT&T also holds a huge edge over Verizon Wireless in contract subscribers with either a smartphone or messaging device, 53 percent to 35 percent.

AT&T officials said they expected new contracts to rebound in the third quarter because the iPhone 4 will be available for the entire reporting period.
