CHICAGO, July 21 (UPI) -- U.S. food and home products giant Sara Lee Corp. is fishing around for a buyer for its bread division, sources told The Chicago Tribune.
The company did not comment on the speculation, but Credit Suisse analyst Robert Moskow said in a research note this week that it was "the right strategic move for Sara Lee," the newspaper reported Wednesday.
Sara Lee has sold several non-food divisions in recent years, starting with Hanesbrands in 2006 and, to Procter & Gamble, its air products line. It is also divesting itself of its household product and insecticide line.
In the first quarter of 2010 in North America, its retail sales increased 5 percent, while its bakery sales dropped 4 percent.
The Tribune said U.S. firm Hostess and Mexican breadmaker Grupo Bimbo could be in line to purchase Sara Lee's bread division, which currently commands 5.2 percent of the market, falling in between Bimbo, with 11.3 percent, and Hostess with 4.8 percent.
