ATHENS, Greece, June 29 (UPI) -- Striking workers took to the streets in Greece Tuesday to protest the government's latest austerity budget, French media reported.
Radio France Internationale reported hospital workers and civil servants took part in the strike, which was the second general protest in a week.
Journalists also joined the strike, which made it difficult for Greeks to learn what was happening, RFI said.
About 500 protesters blocked passengers from boarding ships to islands in the vicinity of Athens but the government sent 1,000 police and coast guard personnel to keep large ships available for travel to the Aegean islands.
The austerity budgets were passed to bring the government's debt load into compliance with European Union guidelines and to qualify the government for international loans meant to help meet short-term obligations.
The government's debt is currently at $365 billion.
