Crop report shows gains all around

WASHINGTON, June 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture said 94 percent of the nation's corn has emerged in the field, as planting is completed.

After a fast early half of the planting season, the corn crop remains ahead of the five-year average, which lists corn as 91 percent emerged by this week of the year.

The soybean crop is 84 percent planted, while cotton planting is 91 percent completed.

Sorghum, in step with its historic average, is 65 percent planted this week. Peanut planting is 92 percent done, slightly ahead of the historic average for the crop, the USDA said.

The rice crop is also keeping up with its historic average at 91 percent emerged, while the spring wheat crop, 90 percent emerged, is slightly behind its five-year average.

The winter wheat crop is 84 percent headed out with the harvest just under way. The 18 largest winter wheat producing states report the harvest this week is 3 percent done.
